Sonoma Raceway underwent a comprehensive repaving project, its first in over 23 years, to enhance the racing experience for drivers and fans. The project commenced on December 28, 2023, with crews milling the old surface of the 2.52-mile road course. Over the next 61 days, the track was ground down, cracks were repaired, and brand-new, long-lasting asphalt was laid down. The paving was completed on February 23, 2024, making the track ready to host some of the fastest cars and most talented racers in the world.
The repaving was managed by Bay Cities Paving & Grading of Concord, California, and included both layouts of the road course used by NASCAR, as well as the drag strip located in the infield. The materials used in the repave were selected to provide a seasoned feel for drivers, aiming to ensure exciting competition right from the start of the 2024 racing season.
Following the repave, testing was conducted in late March to prepare for the first NASCAR races on the new surface in June 2024. The upgraded track surface was expected to enhance driver performance and provide a smoother, more competitive racing experience.
Overall, the repaving project at Sonoma Raceway represented a significant investment in the future of racing at the historic venue, ensuring it remains a premier destination for motorsports enthusiasts.
