New Jersey Motorsports Park-NJMP Thunderbolt
New Jersey Motorsports Park-NJMP Thunderbolt Notes:
The New Jersey Motorsports Park (NJMP) is a set of motorcycle and automobile racing facilities comprised of two main road courses, Lighting and Thunderbolt, and an additional go-kart racing complex called Tempest. It started operations back in 2008 and offers the possibility to host racing events on each racetrack, separately and simultaneously. It is located right beside the military airport of Millville, New Jersey. The humid subtropical climate prevalent in the southern part of New Jersey means the tracks tend to be humid most of the year, with up to 15 days of light precipitation a month on average.
Some of the major events where NJMP is a staple part of the calendar are the Trans-Am Series, CCS, ARCA Racing, SCCA, or the AMA Superbike Championship, to name a few. Both Lighting and Thunderbolt road courses have an asphalt surface, with noticeable elevation changes and long straightaways combined with sweeper curves, resulting in fast driving circuits. The average speed in Lighting is 92 mph and in Thunderbolt is 88 mph. Both racetracks have a clockwise direction and open seating throughout the course, with a large capacity for spectators' accommodation.
Thunderbolt Notes:
New Jersey Motorsports Park's Thunderbolt configuration delivers 3.620 kilometers of challenging clockwise racing across southern New Jersey's Cumberland County flatlands, featuring 12 primary turns including the notorious Jersey Devil—a late-apex corner testing commitment and tire grip limits. Located adjacent to Millville Executive Airport, this purpose-built 2008 facility's Thunderbolt layout emphasizes a 805-meter front straight reward horsepower before plunging into technical infield sections with multiple elevation changes defying the region's perceived flatness. The 2024 multi-million dollar repaving modernized surface characteristics while the 2025 Devil's Pass addition created new configuration options utilizing an optional Turn 3 chicane for varied challenge levels.
Thunderbolt's defining character emerges from elevation transitions that surprise first-time visitors expecting pancake-flat East Coast racing. The Jersey Devil section demands precision throttle control through a deceptive corner where mid-corner bumps unsettle chassis balance, while the circuit's various named corners create rhythm sections separating smooth drivers from aggressive over-drivers. New Jersey's continental climate creates dramatic seasonal variation—summer sessions see track temperatures exceeding 45°C while spring and fall events operate in near-freezing conditions affecting tire compound selection significantly. The facility's 16-hectare paddock infrastructure supports regional club racing, national series rounds, track day organizations, and driving schools year-round. The recent Devil's Pass extension offers faster flowing alternatives to the classic Thunderbolt layout, though purists favor the original 12-turn configuration that established NJMP's reputation as the mid-Atlantic's premier purpose-built road racing venue just two hours from New York City and Philadelphia markets.
