Tires: CRS (dying into dead)
Weather: Hot and humid
Setup changes/maintenance:
- Brake fluid flush
- Oil change
This event marks the end of my 3rd year of HPDEs. The weekend started out awful - was under the weather, forgot my fisherman's hat, and most importantly, a giant nail punctured the sidewall on one of my tires. I decided to put on just 2 of my street tires up front, and it was gd awful. Terminal understeer made me so sad. Fortunately, Wade and Greg at Premier Mobile Tire had a similarly worn CRS from their garage at Thunderhill, so I was finally able to have some fun on Sunday. By the end, 2 of my tires were bald, 1 was corded, and the replacement tire had maybe half a day left. In retrospect, had I been able to really drive on Saturday, I may not have driven much or at all on Sunday either, so it was fine.
I really like the CRS. The grip was still really good despite the wear and conditions, and they tolerate my car's weight really well like the V730s. I will try to stick with them for a while before trying VR2s. I may also go back to RE71RS at some point because my driving has improved a lot since I ran them. I'm much better at managing the load on the front axle, and I'm a bit better at using rotation to go fast. Also for some reason RE71RS went down in cost...
I was wondering for a while why my AIM would record absurdly high lateral Gs, and apparently I needed to actually use the screws in the backplate. The device stayed in place with just the magnet, so I thought it was okay, but I guess the small vibrations within the backplate were not good for accuracy. The data is much better now so I gotta remember to always use the screws.
The heat and humidity was really bad for the car. I didn't know this, but humid air is less dense, so turbos lose a lot of efficiency. Power was down all around, even on Sunday when I used higher octane and conditions were slightly better. Also, my water temps have been really high as of late, so I may need to also flush the coolant. The water wetter has probably worn off as well since I've done so many track days. I'm still considering Verus' A90 oil cooler, but money is a bit tight right now.
I will be taking a break for real this time. I won't be doing any track days until the half cage and all the other suspension changes are in. I'm hoping I can get it all done so I can shake it down for the Labor Day event, but it's not looking good. I will miss the annual 5mi event, which makes me a little sad, but it's for the better.
