Kanagawa
Kanagawa Prefecture is the "second prefecture." Kanagawa's population is 9.2 million (2024). Japan's 2nd largest (after Tokyo). But Kanagawa residents are used to being "after Tokyo." Yokohama and Kawasaki both exist as "cities adjacent to Tokyo." For Kanagawa residents, "independent identity" is difficult. Always compared to Tokyo. However, Kanagawa has "Daikoku PA." Daikoku Parking Area is on the Shuto Expressway Bayshore Route. Opened 1989. Kanagawa residents display their cars at this parking area. Every night, modified cars gather. Skylines, Supras, RX-7s, Fairlady Zs. For Kanagawa residents, Daikoku PA is the "car showroom." But in 2024, Daikoku PA has problems. Too many tourists. Too many foreigners taking photos. Trespassing. Police enforcement intensified. For Kanagawa residents, the "car culture holy site" is becoming touristified. Contradiction. Kanagawa residents pour passion into "displaying" cars. But few places to "drive" them. Fuji Speedway is about 90km away (about 90 minutes). Suzuka Circuit is about 380km away (about 5 hours). Kanagawa residents are motorsport "spectators" and "exhibitors." But not "participants." Daikoku PA is on the expressway. Only accessible by car. Meaning Kanagawa residents can't participate in car culture without owning a car. Contradictory.
