Exige GT3
The Lotus Exige GT3 is a purpose-built racing car developed by Lotus Sport for FIA GT3 competition, based on the Series 2 Exige platform. The GT3 variant features a modified version of Toyota's 1ZZ-FE 1.8-liter inline-four engine with Lotus-developed supercharger producing approximately 285 horsepower, paired with a six-speed sequential transmission. The control formula for GT3 racing required significant modifications to bring the lightweight Lotus platform up to minimum GT3 weights while maintaining competitive performance against larger GT3 machinery.
The Exige GT3 features comprehensive racing modifications including FIA-certified roll cage, carbon fiber bodywork with GT3-spec aerodynamics including large rear wing and front splitter, adjustable suspension with racing dampers, sequential pneumatic shifter, racing brake system with ABS, and center-lock wheels. The bonded and extruded aluminum chassis provides exceptional rigidity and crashworthiness despite minimal weight. Weighing approximately 1,653 pounds in base form, ballast was added to meet GT3 minimum weights while maintaining optimal weight distribution. The Exige GT3 competed in various GT3 series including British GT Championship and European GT3 series, though the smaller engine displacement and lightweight platform presented challenges competing against 5.0+ liter V8 and V10-powered GT3 cars from larger manufacturers. The car demonstrated Lotus chassis engineering excellence with exceptional handling and cornering speeds, though straightline performance sometimes suffered relative to more powerful GT3 competitors. The Exige GT3 represents Lotus's return to top-level GT racing with their characteristic lightweight engineering philosophy adapted to GT3 regulations.
