Z4 E89
The BMW Z4 E89, produced from 2009 to 2016, represents the second generation Z4 and marked a significant departure from its predecessor by introducing a retractable hardtop roof that could deploy in less than 20 seconds, eliminating separate roadster and coupe variants. Built on a platform shared with previous BMW roadsters, the E89 offered diverse engine options ranging from the 156 hp sDrive18i four-cylinder through the 241 hp sDrive28i 2.0-liter turbo N20, to the 302 hp sDrive35i with the twin-turbo N54 3.0-liter inline-six, and the range-topping 335 hp sDrive35is. Engine displacement ranged from 1,997 cc to 2,996 cc with power outputs between 181 HP and 335 HP across various markets.
Measuring 166.89 inches in length with a 98.27-inch wheelbase, the E89 featured standard BMW EfficientDynamics technologies including regenerative braking, electric power steering, engine start-stop system, and an electric parking brake. The driving mode selector offered Comfort, Sport, and Sport+ modes adjusting throttle response, gearbox behavior, power steering weighting, and adjustable dampers. Standard equipment included directional headlights, dual-zone climate control, and parking sensors. With curb weights ranging from 3,241 to 3,527 lbs and no diesel or all-wheel drive (xDrive) options offered, the E89 Z4 established itself as a refined open-air sports car combining BMW dynamic excellence with everyday usability and genuine grand touring capability.
