Mission Raceway Park 1:12.122 PB lap at Speedy Goat Time Trials Aug 14 2023 (Sport 2 track record for Mission). I was a little surprised at resetting the Sport 2 track record after my buddy Matt had rudely stolen it away from me ; ) at the previous VCMC event. It was an extremely hot day at Mission and the drifters had been there the day before, so the track wasn't in the best condition for PBs. In the first session of the day Matt beat me by a couple of thousands of a second and I thought that was it, as the air and track temps would be getting too hot, game over. I decided that even though I was unlikely to get faster I'd give it one last go even though I had almost zero brake pad life left (a mechanic friend Kyle was shaking his head at me when he measured my pad thickness). In the session I had very clean laps, almost zero correcting of slides and I avoided the outside edges of the track where the slippery Drift car rubber was, but even though there were no mistakes I felt I had left too much on the table in the braking zones (Kyle was in my head). I wasn't running any data on my phone in the car, I didn't want that affecting how I drove so I had no idea of my actual time. I knew it would be sort of quick, but wasn't thinking track record quick. When I returned to the pits after the session Kyle walked over with his phone held out, 1:12.122, I was surprised but pumped by the result! I guess clean and smooth IS fast. Thinking about it after, my take is that because I was so under control in the braking zones I was able to get clean fast launches out of the corners and likely gained most of the time there and because that lengthens the time on throttle I also would have gained at the end of each straight. It was over a 1/2 second faster than I have gone before at Mission. Next goal... getting into the 11s, with cooler temps I know it's possible. Thanks for pushing me Matt! We are having a great time lowering the Mission lap record bar and stealing it away from each other on a regular basis, you've had it twice and I've had it twice in the last year. This is fun.
