Was back at Dominion this past weekend competing in WDCR-SCCA TT. I entered my car in the Max 2 class and ended up placing 6th out of 12. Time Trials is much more competitive format than Track Cross, simply because novice drivers are not allowed to enter. With multiple cars on track, and passing allowed everywhere with a point by, drivers need to be safe and familiar on track with other drivers.
The last time i was at Dominion last year, my personal best was a 1:37.9. Today, despite very hot temperatures, an early off-track-adventure which stole some confidence out of me, and a relative lack of seat time lately, I managed to drive down the personal best to a new time of 1:35.9. Unfortunately, the session in which that time was set, did not get recorded.
One of the biggest issues i was dealing with the last time were brakes. I ate through a fresh set of pads in one day at Dominion, which hurts the wallet and on-track confidence. Since then, a 27won BBK (4 piston front calipers and up-sized 330mm two piece rotors, DTC60 pads) has been added and today was the first real test of the new system. Additionally, over the winter I crafted a set of lower control arm mounted air deflectors, which channel cool air to the back of the rotor. All of this together exceeded my expectations, and suffice to say that my braking and pad wear issues are no more. Now I think i need to grow into this braking system as a driver, because i'm still braking like i've got stock brakes. Though if there is one place to be scared of the braking zones, it's Dominion Raceway.
