He’s done it again! After Mexico City on the previous weekend, Charles Leclerc has set another DHL Fastest Lap, this time in the USA Grand Prix, thereby staking a firm claim to the 2019 title in this particular classification.
Lewis Hamilton was meanwhile clinching his sixth world championship title in Austin with two races to spare, but he was nowhere matching Leclerc this time in terms of fastest race lap.
After a second tire change onto soft tires, the Monegasque went purple on Lap 44 to set a time of 01:36.169 minutes. That was a new lap record for the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, shaving more than a second off the previous one, a time of 01:37.392 minutes set by Hamilton in last year’s race.
Leclerc was not the only contestant to go faster at the weekend. Valtteri Bottas had also cracked the record on Lap 37 after making his second stop. The Finn registered a time of 01:36.957 minutes immediately after a change to medium tires. Seven laps later, Bottas lost the briefly held record to Leclerc who went 0.788 seconds faster.
Thanks to the two wins in Mexico and the United States, Charles Leclerc has a realistic chance of coming out on top in the 2019 DHL Fastest Lap Award. With two races left, the Ferrari rookie is on four fastest laps, only one behind the old and new world champion Lewis Hamilton.
Max Verstappen could still draw level with Hamilton if he posts the fastest lap in both remaining races.
