Mustang V6 S550 Convertible
The Ford Mustang V6 S550 Convertible, produced from 2015 to 2017, represented the base convertible offering in the sixth-generation Mustang lineup before being discontinued in January 2017 as part of the 2018 model year refresh. Powered by the 3.7-liter Cyclone V6 engine producing 300 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, the V6 offered respectable performance with 0-60 mph acceleration in 5.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 124 mph. Compared to the 2014 model, the torque peak occurred 250 rpm lower while maximum power decreased by 5 horsepower, though improvements in chassis dynamics and weight distribution enhanced overall driving dynamics significantly over the previous generation.
The convertible featured an all-new power-folding soft top mechanism that reduced opening and closing time by half compared to the S197 generation, with a full headliner incorporating thicker insulation for improved cabin quietness. The top stowed neatly providing 11.4 cubic feet of trunk space. Transmission options included the Getrag-supplied MT82 six-speed manual with updated low-drag synchronizers and stiffer linkage for improved shift quality, or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. EPA fuel economy ratings of 17 mpg city and 28 mpg highway made the V6 convertible an efficient open-air cruiser. While lacking the performance of EcoBoost and GT variants, the V6 S550 Convertible offered accessible Mustang ownership with modern styling, improved dynamics, and genuine everyday usability at an attractive price point.
