The Audi R8 LMS GT4, introduced in 2018, is a more accessible and cost-effective version of Audi’s R8 LMS, designed for GT4 racing series worldwide. Unlike the GT3-focused LMS models, the GT4 is closer to the production road-going Audi R8, retaining many of its components but modified to comply with GT4 regulations, which emphasize lower running costs and closer-to-stock performance.
The R8 LMS GT4 features the same 5.2L naturally aspirated V10 engine as the road car but detuned to produce around 495 hp (varied slightly depending on Balance of Performance requirements for GT4). Unlike the GT3 models, the GT4 car uses a simpler, cost-effective braking system and lacks some of the adjustable aerodynamics found on the GT3 variant, though it retains a large rear wing, front splitter, and rear diffuser optimized for GT4 specifications.
Other modifications include a racing interior with an FIA-approved roll cage, racing seat, and six-point harness. Audi also equipped the GT4 with safety features required by GT4 regulations, including fire suppression systems and a race-specific fuel cell. The suspension is track-tuned but lacks the high adjustability of the GT3 models, aligning with GT4’s cost-focused philosophy.
The R8 LMS GT4 was created to allow amateur and semi-professional drivers a way into racing without the high costs of GT3, while still providing a high-performance experience. It has been successful in GT4 racing around the world, offering a balanced, approachable entry point into endurance and sprint racing.
