The battle for victory in the Formula 1 Bahrain GP was hard-fought, as Red Bull driver Max Verstappen pulled out all the stops to catch Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen remained in contention until the final lap of the race, keeping up the pressure, but it was not quite enough. Verstappen stayed in second place despite posting the DHL Fastest Lap.

Hamilton started from pole position and asserted his lead on the first lap while Verstappen quickly settled into P2 and put pressure on him. At no time did he let Hamilton gain more than six seconds.

Verstappen was the faster driver of the two on occasions in the middle of the race, reducing the gap to three seconds as he went all-out to get within striking distance. But Hamilton was well able to defend himself, and finally, Verstappen decided to leave things as they stood, stopping again shortly before the end to secure the DHL Fastest Lap, a 1:32.014, on fresh medium tires.

“In the race, I tried everything I could to stay with Lewis, and there wasn’t much left to give, but unfortunately, we were just a bit too slow,” said Verstappen. “I think we could maybe have put Mercedes under a bit more pressure, but overall, I think second is where we belong today with the pace of the car.”
