Who says morning Time Trial sessions are fastest? NASA Great Lakes TT5 driver John Turner proved that old adage wrong when he set a new TT5 lap record at 1:38.757 on the Club Course at Mid-Ohio.
In this segment of the NASA Racing Gear Store Move of the Month, Turner went out for an afternoon session and disproved another myth by nailing the record on his fifth lap of the last session of the day. After adding two clicks of wing and managing his tire pressures all day, Turner was within a half second of the record. He let his tires cool a bit on the fourth lap, then put his head down and went for it.
“The clouds were out, the track felt good, so I thought I might have one more shot,” Turner said. “The front tires had fallen off a bit, but I was able to string together a lap that took the record set by Jordan Hill in 2020 by 0.08s on lap 5 of session 4! The Maxxis RC-1 doesn't normally hang on that long into a session, so I could hardly believe it. This was my first track record, and it really made me work for it!”
This video has the added bonus of a second camera to capture Turner’s footwork. Just goes to show left-foot braking is a skill worth learning.
