Established on October 31, 1965, as a flat, one-mile oval, it was reconfigured in 1969 into a high-banked, D-shaped oval measuring approximately 1.017 miles. The track has been a significant venue in American motorsports, hosting numerous NASCAR events, including the Cup Series, Xfinity Series, and Craftsman Truck Series. After a hiatus, NASCAR announced the return of the Xfinity and Truck Series to Rockingham in April 2025, marking a revival of its storied racing legacy.
In addition to its rich history, Rockingham Speedway has been a platform for various racing disciplines and driver experiences. For instance, a notable lap time recorded at the speedway is 1 minute and 2.97 seconds, achieved by a 2005 Cadillac CTS-V Mk1 equipped with Continental ExtremeContact Force tires.
