Apex Auto Works HPDE event on Sunday 12/12/2021. This was the lap with the least amount of traffic (1 car) that I got in the session. Probably could have broken into the 1:44s if I got a lap without any traffic and/or made fewer mistakes. I was able to improve my lap times by straddling the exit curb at turn 1 (Joe Bone) which is not always possible since there were less cones in place than there sometimes are at other events. The 300/200/100 brake markers were missing since they were set up for the other track direction which caused me to start my braking a bit less consistently than usual. Gas was just over 1/8 of a tank which probably contributed to the slides.
Point bys were optional with passing allowed anywhere. I made sure that I cleared the Miata before rejoining the normal line. Full course black flag ended the session early since unfortunately someone ahead crashed into a tire barrier.
Notes for possible improvements:
- Lost time braking a bit early before turn 3 and carrying a few mph less speed than possible, and too slow entering bus stop + too slow through it + suboptimal entry line from lift off oversteer when starting braking.
- Over-braked by a few mph going into keyhole.
- Was a bit more cautious than usual through gut check and off line to pass Miata before the last 2 turns.
Unmodified car with traction/stability control fully disabled, new set of OEM Goodyear Supercar 3 tires (2017 date code old stock from Tire Rack), track alignment with strut mod for some extra front camber (camber: -2.8° front, -1.4° rear, toe: 0° front, +0.05° rear per side [+0.10° total rear toe]), StopTech STR 600 DOT 4 brake fluid, stock Brembo (Ferodo HP1000/1) brake pads, GM plastic track brake cooling deflectors, smaller GM metal brake dust / splash shields. The car is in track mode with touring steering mode. Ambient temperature was about 58°F and sunny. There was a Chin event the day before (CCW direction) which probably helped a bit with grip compared to some of my previous visits to this track.
