My 88 Mustang had a hydraulic clutch failure at the Arizona Motorsports Park race track, so I ran my Tesla 3 Standard Range instead.

It was a lot of fun! The car has "economy minded" tires and not high performance tires so the grip was limited. And the power is lower (~260hp for the Tesla vs 350whp for the Mustang) and the weight is higher (3800lbs in the Tesla vs 3200lbs in the Mustang) so it was definitely slower. Also I have Nitto NT01 tires on the Mustang which are "barely street legal" track tires, so overall the Tesla was about 6 secs per lap slower.

Running at track speeds ate the battery quick. I'd start a session with 160 miles of charge and get off 20 minutes later with 60 miles remaining. I'd then drive 15 miles to the nearest supercharger, charge for 30 mins, then drive back just in time for the next session.

What was really bizarre though was the lack of sound. Except for wind noise coming through the windows (they have to be rolled down while on the track) and a bit of tire squeal in some of the corners, it was silent. Much different than the roar of the V8 Mustang.

Here's a session in my Mustang at the same track for comparison!

I have a Model 3 Performance on order, so once that comes in I'll have to try it out for a session and see the difference (450hp vs 260!) and with the upgraded tires and brakes.
