Welcome to 2022!
First outing with the car was at SMSP for a night track event that i attended with a few friends. Over the summer break i replaced all the bushings, buttoned up a few things and did a fluids change.
The weather was good, the car felt good and i was testing a few different gears/lines for corners in session 1.
Session 2 i went for a proper hot lap as the car was set up and felt great...until i lost 5th gear down the straight at the end of what was still a PB lap. I engaged 5th, released the clutch and there was a small clunk, grinding and the shifter popped back to neutral. After that no 5th gear at all. That's the second gearbox gone in 1.5 years now.
Watching the video back there's actually a few points in the lap that the gearbox is playing up before the failure. Turn 2 it's slow to disengage second gear, heading into turn 8 i couldn't get the shifter into 4th and the disengage is again slow in 3rd. Then there's the failure and complete lockout of 5th down the straight.
All this, coupled with a bit of an overshoot/powerslide out of turn 6 i still rolled across the line for a PB of 1:43.68, two tenths up from the old PB set in November. Without the failure a low 1:43 was surely on the cards.
So what now? I have Round 1 of the NSW Supersprint at Wakefield in two weeks. I only need gears 1-4 there so should be fine and then after that ill have to pull the gearbox again and then go from there.
Thanks!
