Thought I'd put this up publically as no secrets here, and not that great a lap as was full of fuel for the 90min quali session. I went first, just to get my 3 laps in and try and get a decent lap in. Grid poition is not that important in a 24hr race but I always try and go as fast as I can and, as my buddy Chris Yates was just in front of me as we went out we agreed to do a bit of 'draft buddying'. When you get close to another car you BOTH gain. The chasing car more so as you get little to no wind resistance but the lead car also gains as you take away his 'vacuum wake'. As you go through the air at speed air travels over the car and 'swirls back' creating a vacuum vortex behind the car, this effectively 'sucks it backwards' thus limiting speed, a chasing car would take that away from the lead car but of course would still have it's own wake.
You gain more the faster you go so I definitely gained on the straights but Chris' car wasn't running 100% so we only managed low 1:54s wheras I had done 1:53s in testing solo so not a big benefit but probably offsetting the extra fuel. Neither our team or the Muffins would set a quicker lap so these set our grid position, 12th for me, 13th for Chris.
